In 1897, German chemist Felix Hoffman discovered an improved way to synthesize aspirin. In 1921, FDR was stricken with polio. In 1945, the day after the Nagasaki bombing, Japan announced they would surrender. In 1961, Operation Ranch Hand began, during which the US Army sprayed 20 million gallons of defoliants andd herbicides all over South Vietnam in an attempt to deprive the Viet Cong of food. In 1969, the Manson crazies continued their killing spree the day after killing Sharon Tate. In 1990, the Magellan space probe reached Venus.
