February 17. In 1621, Myles Standish was elected first commander of the Plymouth Colony. In 1817, Baron Karl von Drais de Sauerbrun patented the "draisine," an early bicycle. In 1876, Julius Wolff canned sardines for the first time. In 1904, "Madame Butterfly" premiered in Milan. In 1913, the NY Armory Show introduced the US public to Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picassso, Matisse, Duchamp, etc. In 1933, Prohibition ended.
